Methyl salicylate is a colourless to pale yellow transparent liquid with a strong wintergreen oil aroma. It is found naturally in essential oils such as Deerfoot Oil, Wintergreen Oil, Birch Oil, Green Tea Seed Oil, Clove Oil, Mistletoe Oil, Evening Primrose Oil, Tea Oil, and in the juices of cherries, apples, and strawberries.

1. Flavouring and preserving
Methyl salicylate has a sweet, mint-like odour and is often incorporated into mints and chewing gums, and is used in a range of common household disinfectants to add a 'fresh' scent. It has also been found to be used in toothpastes and mouthwashes due to its inherent antibacterial and antiseptic properties. It also has some application in embalming solutions.
2. Analgesic
Given that the rapid hydrolysis of esters produces salicylic acid as the active agent, the analgesic effect of methyl salicylate is also indisputable. Mentholatum has produced a compound methyl salicylate cream (formerly known as Mentholatum Friction Cream) for the treatment of injuries and abrasions that occur during sports. Even Korea's once miracle drug for bruises, 'Leng Ba' (Methyl Salicylate Babu Paste), and Japan's hot-selling 'Salon Bass' (Methyl Salicylate Menthol Paste) are all attributed to the re-incarnation of Methyl Salicylate as a wizard.
3. Transdermal promotion of osmosis, softening rubber
