Tributyrin is a short chain fatty acid ester. It appears as a colorless to pale yellow oily liquid, almost odorless with a faint fatty aroma.. In the digestive system, it does not decompose in gastric juice; instead, it is broken down into butyric acid and glycerol by pancreatic lipase.

Liquid tributyrin, a targeted feed energy source, releases butyric acid in the lower gut to nourish intestinal cells, strengthen barriers, and reduce pathogens in livestock, poultry, and aquaculture. It boosts feed efficiency (notably in young animals) via better nutrient absorption, with its liquid form ensuring uniform mixing—enhancing growth and lowering diarrhea.
